The husband and I had an excellent time at the Veg Fest this year. We managed to eat and drink our way around Fiesta Gardens despite a cloudy, damp day.
The people are so friendly and the food, of course, is plentiful and delish!
We ate all sorts of wonders starting with Freeto Burritos from the Vegan Yacht food truck, to an Oatmeal Cream Pie cookie and the standard Mac & Cheez from the Happy Vegan Baker. We had to have some brussel sprouts from The Dojo because we knew how amazing they were and just couldn't resist. Countless samples were also consumed as well as a local beer. We were not disappointed with a single bite!
In addition to taste bud delights, we got to listen to come great speakers too. I really enjoyed hearing vegan professional boxer, Mac Danzig, speak about how his athletic ability (and overall life) have been enhanced since he made the switch to vegan, and ultimately raw vegan. Ahh, the power of plants! This man is tough, strong and 100% bad ass!
We also were fortunate enough to catch Sharon Hausman-Cohen, MD speak about the benefits of plant based diets on health. I almost skipped this speaker because I already know the benefits, but somehow I wanted to see how a local MD presented it since many MDs are unfamiliar and apprehensive at best about plant based diets. Dr. Hausman-Cohen was awesome! She spoke about how and why many doctors simply uniformed about diets (any diet) role in human wellness. They simply aren't taught it or what they are taught is brief and highly antiquated. It seems crazy to think about. She went on to present to the crowd a presentation that she travels the country educating her doctor colleagues with. Pretty powerful stuff. Science aside, she is a really charismatic Doc that was very enjoyable and warm. You can visit her at Balcones Woods Family Medicine here is Austin.
Overall, our day was tasty and fun. We love the festival and cannot wait till next year. Hope to see you there!
